CBS 8 NEWS IS EVERYWHERE
CBS 8 BECOMES MOST POWERFUL TV STATION IN MONTGOMERY

From CBS 8 News -- After years of anticipation, Friday, June 12 marked the Digital Deadline, the day that TV stations across the country shut off their analog transmitters and broadcast digital signals exclusively.

CBS 8 shut off its analog transmitter late last year. But now we are finally allowed to broadcast our digital signal at full power, which is one million watts. CBS 8 will have the most powerful signal of any Montgomery television station.

"We will be able to send our digital signal out to more people than any other station in the market," CBS 8 Vice President and General Manager Jim Caruthers said. "That's pretty much the bottom line is that our signal is going to reach more people than anybody else's. And they'll get to watch the fabulous CBS programming on CBS 8," he said.

The CBS 8 signal can be found on digital channel 42, which many televisions and converter boxes will recognize as channel 8.1.  We had to wait until June 12 to boost our signal because a TV station in Birmingham broadcasted in analog on channel 42.  Once that station turned off its analog transmitter, the government allowed CBS 8 to go to full power.

Remember, you'll need a converter box and a UHF antenna to receive CBS 8 if you're watching on an analog TV and aren't a Cable TV or Dish Network subscriber.

We hope you continue to enjoy watching CBS 8 as we begin a new chapter in our broadcast history!

Recent Problems with CBS 8 Digital Signal?

If you have been receiving CBS 8 using a DTV Converter box or digital television, but you recently lost your signal, you may be able to continue receiving CBS 8 by telling your converter box or digital television to scan for digital channels. Even if you still see 8-1, 8-2, and 8-3 (or 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3, depending on your set), you will still have to re-scan for channels. Depending on your DTV converter box or television, you may also be able to enter 42 on the remote to tune to our new signal.

With the DTV transition completion on June 12, we are now allowed to go to full power on our permanent channel as of 12:01 AM, June 13.  If you are currently receiving our signal, you should not have to take any additional action to receive us, but you will need to scan for digital channels on your digital television or DTV converter box to receive some of the other stations in the market that are changing channels as of June 12.  If you are unable to receive our signal now, you will need to scan for digital channels, even if 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3 are showing up on your box or TV with no picture.

June 12, 2009

That was the day that America made the change from analog to ditigal broadcasting.  While it is a revolution in the quality and variety of programming you can see, it can be a little bit scary.

CBS 8 was the first station to launch a full-power digital TV station in our area.  We remain committed to helping you make the transition.  While June 12, 2009, was the new deadline for TV stations to make the change, some stations, including CBS 8, shut down analog service early.  Because of technical issues, we stopped broadcasting an analog TV signal on December 1, 2008.

By asking yourself a few easy questions, you'll be able to know whether you'll have to buy equipment in order to keep watching your favorite TV programs.

After answering the questions, if you still are unsure of what to do, you can call us at (334) 271-8888.

Thank you for watching CBS 8 as together we begin this exciting chapter of TV history!

Converter Box Tips

Don't get the channels you expected?

If you connect your converter box and don’t pick up the channels you think you should using the automatic channel scan, here’s a tip.  You may be able to force your converter box to look for a specific channel.  For example, if you don’t get channel 8 on your auto channel scan, you may be able to enter the number 42 just like you would a channel number on your converter box, then move the antenna around until you are able to lock onto the signal.  Depending on which converter box you have, you may have to run a new auto scan once you lock on to the signal, or it may automatically add it to the channel list.

Here are the numbers to enter for each of the stations in this area:

Audio Problems?

If you are having problems with missing or incorrect audio on your converter box, there are a couple of things you can try.

Some DTV channels have multiple audio channels, and all channels may not be active at the same time.  If the audio is incorrect or missing on just one channel, try tuning to that channel and pressing the "Audio", "SAP", or "MTS" button on your remote.  You may have to press the button multiple times to get the audio back to where it should be.

If you have no audio on any channels on your converter box, check your converter box remote for a volume control or a mute button.  With some converter boxes, you can control the volume with the converter box as well as the TV, so it's possible to have the audio turned down or off on the converter box.
