Thursday, July 3: Benefits of Broccoli

Researchers say just a few more servings each week of broccoli may protect men from prostate cancer.

They believe a chemical in the food sparks hundreds of genetic changes, activating some genes that fight cancer and switching off others that fuel tumors.

There's plenty of evidence linking a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to a reduced cancer risk, but this is the first piece of research to investigate how the foods actually fight the disease.

Adams Drugs has been family owned and operated since 1962. We have six central Alabama locations! (4 in Montgomery, 1 in Prattville, and 1 in Wetumpka). We offer city-wide delivery and charge accounts, but more importantly we offer prompt, friendly prescription service. Our goal is to “know” everyone we serve and do a better job providing care and service than our competitors. For example, we stopped selling tobacco products over 14 years ago despite the fact that tobacco revenues is the largest profit generator at most of your big chain pharmacies!

One of our latest Medical Breakthroughs is our new “closed door” pharmacy in East Montgomery that repacks RXs into bubble packs for nursing home and assisted living patients, as well as patients living at home with their children. Most people under special care are there because they can not manage their medications. So our new business is called “Adams Drugs Medicine on Time” which gives us the opportunity to serve these patients more effectively!

20/20 Ophthalmic Associates, P.C. is a professional medical practice located at 2020 Normandie Drive in Montgomery, Alabama, adjacent to Baptist South Hospital.  Our practice is led by four Medical Doctors:  Dr. Harold A. Hatcher, Dr. Ricki Dobbs, Dr. Frank C. Young III and Dr. Claiborne C. Moore, who specialize in comprehensive ophthalmology, "no stitch" cataract surgery, glaucoma treatment and lasik procedures.  Our patients may choose from a great selection of eyeglasses or contacts without even leaving the 20/20 building.

The establishment of the 20/20 practice in Montgomery can be traced to the late 1960s, and the current facility at 2020 Normandie Drive has been our home since 1972.  Whether you are seeking treatment for small children, teenagers or senior adults, it would be difficult to find a more experienced, compassionate and competent group of physicians anywhere.

Please call us at (334) 286-2020, or visit our website at 2020visionspecialists.com.  We look forward to seeing you and look forward to you seeing more clearly.

Wednesday, July 2: Harmful Sun Exposure, Even Without Sunburn

Scientists warn that even when you don't burn, the effects of the sun's ultraviolet exposure can still be harmful.

There are two types of ultraviolet rays to watch out for. UVB -- the rays which damage skin cells  and UVA rays, which are traditionally thought to be safe rays.

Researchers analyzed sun-damaged cells and found that although UVB rays damage more of the skin, causing burns, UVA rays cause unseen skin damage.

Researchers say good sunscreen should protect against both.

Tuesday, July 1: "Good" Cholesterol Can Protect More Than Heart

The so-called "good" cholesterol may be doing more than helping to protect your heart.

A new British study found that middle-aged people with low levels of that form of cholesterol are at higher risk for memory decline that could foreshadow the development of Alzheimer's disease.

Researchers hope the findings will lead to a new emphasis on diet to protect the brain.

Monday, June 30: New Way to Fight Cervical Cancer

The prescription drug Gardasil may soon be approved for use in boys.  The medication was approved for adolescent girls in 2006.  It protects against human papalloma virus, which can lead to cervical cancer in women.

A recent government study found 18% of adolescent girls have the virus.  There are few studies about the virus in teenage boys, but it's estimated that half of all men have the virus at some point in their lives and can pass it on to females.

Friday, June 27: Help for Hearing Loss

The government spends about $1 billion a year helping soldiers who lose their hearing on the battlefield.

But a major breakthrough by doctors in Oklahoma could be music to soldiers' ears. They say they have uncovered the secret of preventing hearing loss from loud noises.

There is now a new drug to stop the cells within the ear from dying when loud noises cause trauma.  Researchers tested it on some animals and hope to begin clinical trials on people within a year.
