Tuesday, November 3

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Auburn strong safety Zac Etheridge has been released from the hospital two days after suffering a neck injury against Mississippi.

Coach Gene Chizik said Monday that Auburn's medical staff is confident that will make a complete recovery. Chizik did not release details of the nature of Etheridge's injury. The junior is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Etheridge was hurt Saturday when he collided headfirst with teammate Antonio Coleman early in the game. He was strapped to a backboard before being taken off the field and gave a thumbs-up on the way out.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - No. 3 Alabama coach Nick Saban is adamant that he doesn't want his team's approach to change with No. 9 LSU visiting.

Saban borrowed Monday from Joe Girardi, saying the Yankees manager said the best way to close out the World Series was to play good baseball.

Saban said he wants the Crimson Tide to focus on playing good football and think about what they have to gain, not what they could lose. Alabama could clinch a spot in the SEC championship game with a win Saturday, or LSU could move into the driver's seat.

Tight end Colin Peek is trying to work his way back from a sprained knee. Saban said the team's No. 2 receiver was day-to-day. Running back Terry Grant and defensive back Dre Kirkpatrick are also day-to-day with pulled muscles.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Florida coach Urban Meyer has suspended Brandon Spikes for the first half of Saturday's game against Vanderbilt after the star linebacker attempted to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey in a 41-17 victory.

Meyer says Spikes was retaliating after getting his eye poked earlier in the game.

Spikes is fourth on the team with 42 tackles and has three sacks. He decided to return for his senior season instead of entering the NFL draft. The team's defensive captain has missed most of two games this season with an injured groin. He played only a series against Arkansas and sat out the entire game at Mississippi State on Oct. 24.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The Southeastern Conference named Mississippi State running back Anthony Dixon, Auburn cornerback Walt McFadden and Florida kicker Caleb Sturgis as its players of the week.

Auburn's McFadden tied a career-high with five tackles and returned the first of two interceptions for a touchdown against Mississippi. Auburn end Antonio Coleman won defensive line honors.

Dixon rushed for a school-record 252 yards and two touchdowns in State's win over Kentucky. It's the SEC's highest total this season.

Sturgis won special teams honors after kicking a career-long 56-yard field goal and making a 44-yarder in Florida's win over Georgia.

Arkansas guard Mitch Petrus was offensive lineman of the week while Tennessee defensive back Janzen Jackson was freshman of the week.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Chase Utley has tied a World Series home run record while helping the Philadelphia Phillies send the Fall Classic back to the Bronx.

Utley homered twice as the Phillies clobbered the New York Yankees 8-6 to force a Game 6. The second baseman joins Reggie Jackson as the only players to hit five home runs in a single World Series. Jackson needed six games to do it for the 1977 Yanks against the Dodgers, going deep on his final three swings.

Utley put the Phils ahead to stay with a three-run blast in the bottom of the first after Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez laced an RBI double. Utley added a seventh-inning solo shot, three batters before Raul Ibanez went deep. Utley also scored while the Phillies were chasing losing pitcher A.J. Burnett during a three-run third. Burnett was lifted following consecutive RBI singles by Jayson Werth and Ibanez.

Cliff Lee has both of Philly's World Series wins after allowing five runs over seven-plus innings. Lee tossed a six-hitter in beating the Bombers 6-1 in the opener. Burnett was charged with six runs and five hits over two-plus innings.

Ryan Madson allowed a ninth-inning run before claiming the save.

Rodriguez had three RBIs for the Yankees, who host Game 6 Wednesday.

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Brad Keselowski will start his new job at Penske Racing a little early.

Keselowski will drive the No. 12 Dodge for the final three NASCAR Sprint Cup races of the season, replacing David Stremme. Keselowski, who won the Cup race at Talladega in April, signed a deal in September to take over the No. 12 in 2010. Team owner Roger Penske opted to bring Keselowski in ahead of schedule so the driver can get jump start on next season.

The 25-year-old Keselowski is currently ranked third in the Nationwide Series points race while driving for JR Motorsports. He'll drive the No. 22 Dodge for Penske in the Nationwide Series next year.

Stremme was 31st in points through 33 races this season.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - Eltoro Freeman gave Auburn's thin linebacking corps a boost.

Freeman had 12 tackles against No. 9 LSU after returning to the Tigers' starting lineup. He had missed the Arkansas trip for what coach Gene Chizik described as personal issues and had been relegated mostly to special teams after logging three starts.

Chizik said Freeman was ready to play football when he returned in whatever role the coaches asked. Freeman started against LSU in place of Adam Herring, who Chizik said was "banged up."

The 5-11, 219-pound sophomore had only seven tackles in Auburn's first seven games. He had one more than that by halftime against LSU, and finished with a sack and two tackles for loss.

The Tigers host No. 24 Mississippi on Saturday.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Mississippi's Dexter McCluster is the SEC offensive player of the week. The league awarded defensive honors Monday to LSU linebacker Harry Coleman while Alabama kicker Leigh Tiffin was the top special teamer.

McCluster became the first Ole Miss player in the modern era to have 100 yards both rushing and receiving in a win over Arkansas.

Coleman had nine tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles in LSU's win over Auburn.

Tiffin accounted for every Alabama point with four field goals in a victory over Tennessee.

The offensive lineman of the week was Kentucky center Jorge Gonzalez, while defensive line honors went to Alabama's Terrence Cody.

Mississippi State defensive back Johnthan Banks was freshman of the week.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin has been reprimanded by the Southeastern Conference for criticizing officials who worked the Volunteers' game against Alabama.

Commissioner Mike Slive said on Monday in a statement released by the league that Kiffin violated the Southeastern Conference code of ethics.

Kiffin complained Sunday that officials failed to penalize Alabama's Terrence Cody for unsportsmanlike conduct when the defensive lineman removed and threw his helmet after blocking a field goal on the last play of Alabama's 12-10 victory Saturday.

This is the second time the SEC has reprimanded Kiffin. Slive said further violations of SEC policies by Kiffin will subject the coach to additional penalties, including suspension.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen has been reprimanded by the Southeastern Conference for criticizing the replay official who worked the Bulldogs' game against Florida.

Commissioner Mike Slive said on Monday in a statement released by the league that Mullen violated the SEC code of ethics.

On Sunday, Mullen said the replay official who worked the Bulldogs' 29-19 loss to Florida should be disciplined for not overturning an interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter by Gators linebacker Dustin Doe, who might have fumbled before reaching the goal line.

The replay official listed for the game in Starkville on Saturday night was Dan Dembinski.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Florida running back Jeff Demps is wearing a neck brace, but coach Urban Meyer expects him to play Saturday against Georgia.

Demps, second on the team with 457 yards rushing and five touchdowns this season, injured his neck during a tackle in Saturday's 29-19 win at Mississippi State. Demps ran five times for 13 yards against the Bulldogs.

Meyer says Demps won't have any contact in practice for at least a couple of days. But the coach believes he will be ready when the top-ranked Gators face the Bulldogs in Jacksonville.

Demps, a 5-foot-8 sophomore from Winter Garden, has played every game the last two seasons.

IRVING, Texas (AP) - Three-time Pro Bowl linebacker DeMarcus Ware and the Dallas Cowboys have finally agreed on a contract extension, a six-year deal through the 2015 season.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says he shook hands with Ware before the Cowboys' 37-21 victory over Atlanta, agreeing to the deal. The paperwork was finalized late Monday and the extension announced.

Ware, who was in the final season of the contract he signed after being the 11th overall pick in the 2005 draft, has 57½ sacks in his 70 regular-season games.

There was no immediate confirmation from the team about financial terms, though a report on the Cowboys' Web site said Ware's deal was for $78 million, an average of $16 million with $40 million guaranteed. Several other media outlets also reported the $40 million guarantee.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - The Southeastern Conference has
suspended officials from last weekend's Arkansas-Florida game after
the crew was involved in its second controversial call of the year.
Referee Marc Curles' crew called a personal foul on Arkansas
defensive lineman Malcolm Sheppard in the fourth quarter as the
Gators were rallying for a 23-20 victory. The league said there was
no video evidence to support the call.
The same group of officials called the LSU-Georgia game earlier
this month, which included a late unsportsmanlike conduct penalty
the league said shouldn't have been called.
The SEC says the crew will be removed from its scheduled
assignment this weekend and will not be assigned to officiate as a
crew until Nov. 14.
The league said the crew's bowl assignments could also be
impacted.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee is starting at a disadvantage
against top-ranked Alabama at the line of scrimmage before ever
taking a snap.
The Crimson Tide's three defensive linemen weigh a combined 100
pounds more than the Volunteers' interior offensive linemen.
The mismatches in Saturday's game start at center, where two
Codys will battle for control. The Vols' 6-foot-1, 260-pound senior
center, Cody Sullins, will be tasked with moving 6-foot-5,
350-pound Tide senior noseguard Terrence Cody.
Sullins says he's looking forward to the challenge of trying to
move "Mount Cody."
Tennessee coaches have said the low man usually wins the battle
at the line of scrimmage - a theory Sullins gets a chance to prove.

Monday, October 12

BIRMINGHAM, AL -  Alabama jumped Texas into second-place behind top-ranked Florida in The Associated Press college football poll, giving the Southeastern Conference the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the country.

The Crimson Tide moved up one spot after rolling over Mississippi 22-3. Texas, which had been No. 2 all season, slipped a spot after sputtering early in a 38-14 victory against Colorado.

The Gators and Tim Tebow beat LSU 13-3. They have been an overwhelming No. 1 since the preseason, but support for Alabama has steadily grown. Florida received 50 of 60 first-place votes from the media panel, a season low. The Crimson Tide received 10 first-place votes, up from five last week.

No. 4 Virginia Tech and No. 5 Boise State each moved up one spot.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Steve Spurrier knows No. 22 South Carolina hasn't played any team nearly as good as No. 2 Alabama this season.

Spurrier says the Gamecocks will have a plan in place to play with the powerful Crimson Tide. South Carolina (5-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference), though, may have to stick with the formula it has used so far this year: lots of defense and special teams, and just enough offense to stay in front.

That's what happened in a 28-26 win over Kentucky on Saturday that improved Spurrier to 17-0 against the Wildcats. All three of Stephen Garcia's touchdown passes to freshman Alshon Jeffery put the Gamecocks back in front.

FONTANA, Calif. (AP) - Jimmie Johnson is back in control of NASCAR's Chase for the Championship.

The three-time defending champion easily pulled away from Jeff Gordon following a restart with three laps remaining to win the Pepsi 500 on Sunday at Auto Club Speedway. The win was Johnson's fourth at the 2-mile oval, a place he has used as a personal launching pad to the title the last two years.

Johnson dominated the second half of the race but had to sweat out a series of double-file restarts following a number of late-race collisions, including one that forced the race to be red-flagged for 22 minutes with six laps remaining.

Juan Pablo Montoya was third, his fourth straight top-5 finish. Mark Martin, who started the day with an 18-point lead over Johnson, finished fourth and now trails Johnson by 12 points heading into Saturday night's race at Charlotte.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The New York Yankees finished a three-game sweep of Minnesota with a 4-1 victory that sends the Bronx Bombers into the American League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Angels. That series will begin Friday night at Yankee Stadium. The Yanks are in the ALCS for the first time since 2004.

In the final game at the Metrodome, the Yanks used a couple of seventh-inning home runs to help dismantle the place. Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada went deep just one inning after the Twins had broken a scoreless tie. The Yanks added a couple insurance runs in the ninth.

Yankee starter Andy Pettitte allowed one run on three hits through six and a-third innings for his 15th career postseason win. That ties John Smoltz for the most postseason victories. Pettitte and three relievers combined on the seven-hitter, with Mariano Rivera recording the four-out save.

BOSTON (AP) - The Los Angeles Angels are back in the ALCS for the first time in four years. Vladimir Guerrero delivered a two-out, two-run single in the top of the ninth inning off of Jonathan Papelbon in a come-from-behind 7-6 win.

The loss sends the Red Sox home for the winter, with the realization they blew a 5-1 lead in the deciding third game. The postseason sweep is the first in Angels' franchise history.

The goat for the Sox was Papelbon. The usually intimidating right-hander hadn't permitted a run in any of his 26 postseason innings before this debacle. But he gave up three runs in the ninth.

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Tony La Russa says he's not certain he wants to return for a 15th season as the St. Louis Cardinals' manager. The Cardinals were the first National League team to clinch a division title, loaded with star power in the lineup and two Cy Young candidates in the rotation. They were the first team to go home after getting swept in the first round by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

UNDATED (AP) - The Denver Broncos, New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts and Minnesota Vikings are unbeaten after five games of the NFL season.

By far the biggest surprise of the NFL season are the Denver Broncos. Rookie head coach Josh McDaniels beat his former mentor Bill Belichick as the Broncos rallied from a 17-0 halftime deficit to stun New England 20-17 in overtime. New Broncos QB Kyle Orton moved Denver from its 2 to the end zone to tie it with a fourth-quarter drive and Matt Prater's 41-yard field goal at 4:45 of overtime sent McDaniels and the Mile High crowd into delirium in Denver. The Broncos are 5-and-0 for the first time since 1998 - the last time they went to the Super Bowl.

- Brett Favre threw for 232 yards and a touchdown as the Vikings beat St. Louis 38-10. Favre showed no signs of a letdown after beating the Packers, his former team, last week, dodging defenders and winging passes in every direction to give Minnesota its first 5-0 start in six years.

Jared Allen returned one of his two fumble recoveries 52 yards for a touchdown and Adrian Peterson rumbled in for a pair of touchdowns for the Vikings. St. Louis wore throwback uniforms from 1999, a nod to the team's only Super Bowl victory but suffered their 15th straight regular season loss.

- Eli Manning started his 83rd consecutive game despite a sore heel and the New York Giants blew out Oakland 44-7. Manning threw two scoring passes and led the Giants on touchdown drives on their first four series before going to the bench late in the second quarter.

- How about those Cincinnati Bengals? Playing for first-place in the AFC North, the Bengals took on the Ravens in Baltimore, and won. Quarterback Carson Palmer threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Andre Caldwell with 22 seconds left to cap an 80-yard drive and the Bengals escaped with a 17-14 victory.

All five of Cincinnati's games this season have been decided by seven points or fewer. It appeared as if the Bengals (4-1) were destined to come out on the short end of this one until Palmer masterfully directed the final drive - with the help of three yellow flags. The 3-2 Ravens are now tied with Pittsburgh for second place.

- Matt Hasselbeck returned from broken ribs and tossed four TD passes in the Seattle Seahawks' most lopsided home shutout in 25 years, 41-0 over the bewildered Jacksonville Jaguars. That ends the Seahawks' three-game slide. Both teams are 2-and-3.

- Washington coach Jim Zorn may be on thin ice. He saw his Redskins blow a 17-2 third-quarter lead as Carolina scored the final 18 points of the game in a 20-17 loss to the Panthers. To get the win, the 1-3 Panthers scored the game's final 18 points. The Skins are 2-3.

- It took overtime in Kansas City but the Dallas Cowboys prevailed, beating the Chiefs 26-20. Miles Austin scored the winning touchdown in o-t on a 60-yard catch-and-run. He finished the game with 10 catches for 250 yards as the Cowboys survived numerous mistakes against the winless Chiefs. Dallas is 3-2 while the Chiefs dropped to 0-5. They are 2-28 in their last 30 games, tying expansion Tampa Bay of the 1970s for one of the worst 30-game droughts in NFL history.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - No. 3 Alabama's defense has done most things well this season. But the Crimson Tide hadn't been forcing many turnovers until getting three interceptions and a fumble recovery for a touchdown against Kentucky. That matched their total through four games.

Alabama ranks second nationally in total and rushing defense, 13th in scoring defense and 15th in pass defense. No. 20 Mississippi coach Houston Nutt, whose team hosts the Tide on Saturday, figures 'Bama gets that much more dangerous when turnovers are added to the equation.

Turnovers have been a specialty under Saban. Alabama had forced 49 turnovers in his first two seasons and the defense is still averaging 1.78 a game during his first 32 games.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - LSU running back Charles Scott, Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain and Auburn kicker Wes Byrum were named Southeastern Conference players of the week.

Scott rushed for a season-high 95 yards and scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes in LSU's win at Georgia to earn offensive honors.

Defensively, McClain had 12 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble and a pass deflection that led to another pick in Alabama's win at Kentucky.

Byrum kicked a career-high four field goals in Auburn's victory at Tennessee.

The offensive lineman of the week was Mississippi tackle John Jerry. Defensive line honors went to Tenarius Wright of Arkansas.

Auburn freshman running back Onterio McCalebb was the top newcomer.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - LSU fans seemingly have Florida's number.

Backup quarterback John Brantley says he has been receiving taunting text messages from numbers he does not recognize. Florida coach Urban Meyer, offensive coordinator Steve Addazio and receiver Riley Cooper have also been getting received extra calls and texts this week, apparently from LSU fans trying to get in their ears, or heads, before Saturday night's game between top-ranked Florida and No. 4 LSU.

Quarterback Tim Tebow had similar issues two years ago before Florida's 28-24 loss in Baton Rouge. He received hundreds messages. Tebow responded by pretending to dial a phone after a touchdown pass in the second quarter.

Tebow's number appears safe this time around.

TROY, Ala. (AP) - The Troy Trojans are facing a top challenger in the Sun Belt Conference.

The Trojans host Middle Tennessee on Tuesday night, seeking their fourth straight win in the series and to hold onto the Palladium Trophy that goes annually to the winner.

Middle Tennessee's spread offense is run by coordinator Tony Franklin. Franklin is the former offensive coordinator at Troy and Auburn.

The Trojans (2-2, 1-0) have won two straight games. Middle Tennessee (3-1, 1-0) has also been rolling since losing the opener, including wins over Memphis and Maryland.

The game features the league's top two quarterbacks. Troy's Levi Brown is the No. 1 passer. Middle Tennessee's Dwight Dasher is the No. 2 passer and No. 5 rusher.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - The Auburn Tigers leapt into the Top 25.

The Tigers made their season debut in the rankings Sunday at No. 17 after a 26-22 win at Tennessee Saturday night. They are 5-0 under first-year coach Gene Chizik.

The Tigers started last season in the Top 10, but stumbled to a 5-7 record. The No. 17 ranking is the highest they have been since going into the Vanderbilt game ranked 13th last Oct. 4.

Auburn hasn't been ranked since last year's loss to Arkansas. The Tigers visit Arkansas on Saturday.

The five wins matches Chizik's total in two seasons at Iowa State. He has Auburn 5-0 for the first time since 2006.

Alabama star linebacker Dont'a Hightower
has undergone surgery to repair a torn knee ligament.
Coach Nick Saban said Wednesday the operation was successful and
the surgeon believes Hightower will make a full recovery.
Hightower's left knee was injured on a cut block against Arkansas
last weekend.
The sophomore inside linebacker for No. 3 Alabama will miss the
rest of the season. He is one of the Crimson Tide's top defenders
and was an immediate starter as a freshman.

- Scotland's Janice Moodie shot a
bogey-free 8-under 64 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead over
14-year-old Alexis Thompson in the Navistar LPGA Classic, with
Michelle Wie and top-ranked Lorena Ochoa two strokes back.
Moodie, a two-time winner on the LPGA Tour, played her final
nine holes - the front nine on The Senator course at the Robert
Trent Jones Golf Trail's Capitol Hill complex, in 6-under 30. She
birdied her final four holes and six of her last seven.
Thompson had eight birdies and a bogey. She tied for 34th in
July in the U.S. Women's Open. Wie eagled the par-5 fifth and had
five birdies and a bogey.
Karine Icher also opened with a 66.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - No. 3 Alabama linebacker Dont'a Hightower will have knee surgery to repair ligament damage.

Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said Sunday that an MRI confirmed that Hightower had damage in his left knee. He did not say if the sophomore inside linebacker might return this season.

Hightower was helped off the field in the first quarter of Saturday's 35-7 win over Arkansas.

Saban did not release specifics about the injury. He said Hightower was expected to make a full recovery. Hightower was a key player on the nation's No. 2 defense alongside All-American Rolando McClain. Saban called him one of the Tide's best players.

Hightower started 12 games as a freshman and is one of only 11 freshmen to start a season opener for Alabama since 1972.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - No. 3 Alabama didn't have a 100-yard rusher or receiver. Mark Ingram didn't produce the Crimson Tide's biggest run play nor Julio Jones its longest pass play.

The Tide continued to spread the offensive wealth in Saturday's 35-7 win over Arkansas. Quarterback Greg McElroy sees it as the 'Bama way, noting that the Tide program has produced national championships but no Heisman Trophy winners.

Arkansas managed to stuff Ingram and Alabama's old reliable running game, which produced just 134 yards on 41 carries.

McElroy responded with his best day, passing for 291 yards and three touchdowns. Jones did have a 50-yard touchdown catch on a trick play.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - The Auburn Tigers mostly breezed through September.

October brings much bigger challenges for the Tigers, starting with Saturday night's visit to Tennessee. Then come trips to Arkansas and No. 4 LSU, sandwiched around a home game against Kentucky. The month ends with No. 21 Mississippi.

Auburn coach Gene Chizik said Sunday the Tigers will have to play better in all phases to have a successful month. Auburn beat winless Ball State 54-30 Saturday night. The Tigers were favored in all four September games.

The month was mostly notable for an offensive revival. The Tigers' 181 points is just 27 fewer than in 12 games last season. That's also the most points an Auburn team has scored in the first four games of any season.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Bills starting cornerback Leodis McKelvin has been taken to the locker room to have tests on what is being called a leg injury sustained in the second quarter of Buffalo's game against New Orleans.

It's not clear when McKelvin was hurt, though he entered the game against the Saints on Sunday with a sore ankle, which he hurt in last week's 33-20 win over Tampa Bay. The ankle injury prevented McKelvin from handling kickoff returns against the Saints.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Florida quarterback Tim Tebow has been released from a Lexington, Ky., hospital, about 12 hours after taking a hard hit to the head against Kentucky.

Coach Urban Meyer said Sunday that Tebow sustained a concussion when he was sacked by defensive end Taylor Wyndham in the third quarter Saturday night. Tebow's head struck teammate Marcus Gilbert's leg, violently bending his neck forward.

"Tim is doing fine this morning," Meyer said in a statement. "His CT scans came back and indicated that Tim suffered a concussion. Our medical and athletic training staff will continue to monitor him to determine how much rest and recovery he needs. We will have additional information and updates this week."

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Jimmie Johnson swept the season races at Dover International Speedway to accelerate his bid for a fourth straight Sprint Cup title.

Johnson cut Hendrick Motorsports teammate Mark Martin's points lead Sunday with the victory - his fourth of the year - in the second of 10 races in the Chase for the championship.

No winner of the second Dover race has ever gone on to win the Cup championship. If any driver can reverse that trend, it's Johnson. Much as he did in May, Johnson's No. 48 Chevrolet was out in front for the majority of the race.

Chase drivers took nine of the first 11 spots. Martin followed last week's win at New Hampshire with a second-place finish. Juan Pablo Montoya was fourth and Kurt Busch fifth.

ATLANTA (AP) - Golf's two biggest stars shared the stage at East Lake with trophies that were meaningful in vastly different ways.

Phil Mickelson capped off a tumultuous summer at home with a spectacular rally from four shots behind Sunday, closing with a 5-under 65 to win the Tour Championship for his first victory since his wife and mother were diagnosed with breast cancer.

Tiger Woods finished off another big year by winning the FedEx Cup for the second time in three years to collect the $10 million bonus. His hopes of winning the Tour Championship ended when he failed to make a birdie until the 15th hole, closing with a 70.

It was dramatic end to the FedEx Cup, with three players having a chance at the big prize on the back nine.

Mickelson made sure the Tour Championship was his all along, shooting 31 on the front nine and playing without a bogey.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Mississippi wasn't ready for the Top 5 -
or South Carolina's defense.
Star passer Jevan Snead was hounded all game and the
fourth-ranked Rebels never got in gear, losing to South Carolina
16-10 Thursday night.
South Carolina (3-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) had been 1-31
all-time against Top 5 foes, but left Williams-Brice Stadium with
the biggest win of coach Steve Spurrier's five seasons.
Spencer Lanning kicked three field goals and fullback Patrick
DiMarco a key 2-yard TD catch for the Gamecocks.
Ole Miss (2-1, 0-1) had one last chance at a go-ahead TD that
would've extended its eight-game winning streak. But Snead was
sacked by Cliff Matthews, then had a fourth-down pass knocked away
by Darian Stewart.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Carl Edwards grabbed the lead from Kevin
Harvick on pit road with 24 laps to go Friday night and won the
NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Richmond.
The victory finished off a remarkable race for Edwards, who had
to start at the back of the field after his team made adjustments
to his Ford after the field was impounded.
The work and penalty were clearly worth it as Edwards steadily
worked his way into contention, first challenging Denny Hamlin for
the lead with 70 laps to go.
Edwards had faded afterward, but when a caution for debris on
the track flew on the 226th lap, the leaders all headed for pit
road, and Edwards beat Harvick back to the track.
Harvick finished second, followed by Kyle Busch, Brad Keselowski
and Davis Reutimann.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama coach Nick Saban says it's fortunate that a Crimson Tide football player wasn't hurt worse when he was shot during an apparent robbery attempt.

Saban said Tuesday the team is concerned with the recovery of Brandon Deaderick, not about when the defensive end will return to football.

Deaderick was shot in the arm during what Tuscaloosa police describe as a robbery attempt at an off-campus apartment on Monday night. He was hospitalized in a private room in good condition and was later released and appeared at afternoon practice.

Deaderick is expected to have a major role on defense during the upcoming season for the fifth-ranked Crimson Tide. Last year, he had four sacks in 14 starts.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama coach Nick Saban finds it horrible to even have questions about whether a team could get knocked out of national championship contention after losing the opener.

He doesn't think that would be an issue for either the fifth-ranked Crimson Tide or No. 7 Virginia Tech after Saturday night. Saban noted that SEC teams have won the last three national titles with at least one loss.

The Hokies also have a tough schedule with early games against Nebraska and Miami to improve their stock quickly if they lose.

Saban also released 'Bama's depth chart. Among the changes: Mark Barron starts at strong safety while Justin Woodall shifts to replace Rashad Johnson at free safety. Terry Grant, a forgotten man in last year's backfield, is listed second-team behind Mark Ingram.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The quarterback fight is over at Vanderbilt with coach Bobby Johnson announcing Monday that his starter is redshirt sophomore Larry Smith.

He is the quarterback who started the Commodores' Music City Bowl win last December. Smith is a former Alabama Mr. Football who led his high school team to a state title. He beat out senior Mackenzi Adams and redshirt junior Jared Funk.

The Commodores open the season Saturday night at home against Western Carolina, the first of 12 straight games.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Southwestern Athletic Conference Commissioner Duer Sharp says all 10 league teams will wear a helmet sticker this season in memory of Steve McNair.

The No. 9 sticker commemorates what McNair did to raise the visibility of the conference while playing at Alcorn State. He finished third in Heisman Trophy voting and brought national attention to Lorman, Miss., before becoming the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL draft.

The 36-year-old Mount Olive native was killed July 4 in a murder-suicide committed by Sahel Kazemi, in Nashville, Tenn.

McNair also will be remembered Saturday when Alcorn State travels to Southern Miss and other commemorations will take place when the Braves begin their home schedule Oct. 10.

UNDATED (AP) - The Atlanta Braves are clawing their way into the
National League playoff picture. The Braves have won nine of 12
following their 3-2 victory over the New York Mets as Kenshin
Kawakami outpitched Johan Santana.
Brian McCann hit a solo homer. Omar Infante (in-fahn-TAY') and
ex-Met Ryan Church also drove in runs for the Braves, who remain
four games out in the NL wild-card race.
One bright spot for the Mets was the return of reliever Billy
Wagner, who made his first appearance since Aug. 2, 2008. Wagner
struck out two in a perfect eighth inning. His fastball touched 96
miles per hour. The former closer had Tommy John surgery last Sept.
10.

In the rest of the NL:
      - NL East-leading Philadelphia won its fourth in a row, 12-3
over Arizona. Jayson Werth hit his fourth home run in three games.
Ryan Howard hit a three-run shot and Carlos Ruiz also went deep for
the Phils, who've won eight of nine. The D-Backs have lost five
straight.
      - Houston beat Florida 4-1 for Wandy Rodriguez's 12th victory.
Carlos Lee and Hunter Pence homered against Florida ace Josh
Johnson, who lost for the first time in seven starts. Johnson is
12-and-3.
      - Colorado moved two games up on San Francisco in the wild card
hunt by sweeping a three-game series in Washington, winning the
finale 4-1. Huston (HYOO'-stuhn) Street worked a perfect ninth for
his 32nd save in 33 chances, including every game this series.
      - Drew Stubbs hit his first career homer leading off the 10th
inning to give the Cincinnati Reds a 2-1 victory over San
Francisco. Stubbs was just called up from Triple-A Louisville when
Willy Taveras was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

      In the AL:
      - Boston completed a three-game sweep in Toronto by beating the
Blue Jays 8-1. J.D. Drew homered twice, Jon Lester pitched eight
strong innings to improve to 10-and-7.
      - Cleveland trounced the AL West-leading L.A. Angels 11-3. In
his third start for the Indians since coming over in the Victor
Martinez trade, Justin Masterson did not allow an earned run in 6
1-3 innings to win for the first time in a Cleveland uniform.
      - Baltimore held off Tampa Bay 8-7 to end a five-game losing
streak. Brian Roberts hit his fourth career grand slam and Nolan
Reimold added a three-run shot.
      - Clete Thomas singled home a run with two-outs to cap a ninth
inning rally to lift the Tigers to a 7-6 win over the Seattle
Mariners. The AL Central-leading Tigers trailed 6-2 before scoring
three times in the sixth and two more in the final inning. The
Tigers now lead the White Sox by 2-and-a-half games in the AL
Central. The White Sox have the day off.

NCAA-MEMPHIS WINS VACATED
Memphis Final Four season turned to goose egg

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The NCAA is forcing Memphis to give up its
38 victories from the Final Four season of 2007-08 under former
coach John Calipari because of an ineligible player.
The announcement comes 16 months after the Tigers lost to Kansas
in the title game. Calipari has moved on to become the coach at
Kentucky.
The NCAA also said the school must return the money it received
from the NCAA tournament appearance.
The NCAA said a player had someone else take his SAT exam,
allowing him to attend Memphis. The player was not identified in
the report, although material previously released by the governing
body indicates it could only be Derrick Rose, the Chicago Bulls'
No. 1 overall draft pick in 2008 and the NBA rookie of the year.
The NCAA also said a man, believed to be Rose's brother,
received free transportation and board during away games that
season.

TRACK AND FIELD/WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
      Bolt still on record streak

BERLIN (AP) - Usain (yoo-SAYN') Bolt set another world record
today.
The Jamaican sprinter captured the 200-meter gold medal in 19.19
seconds
His time in the 200 slashed 0.11 seconds off the mark he set
last year at the Beijing Olympics and came four days after he broke
his 100 record by the same margin.
Bolt is now 5 for 5 in major sprint events. He won the gold in
the 100, 200 and sprint relay in Beijing's Bird Nest, each time
with a world record. Now he is one race away from doing likewise in
Berlin.

NFL-PRESEASON
      Brady holding up

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - Chad Ochocinco showed he can kick as
well as catch. And Tom Brady showed he can take some hits.
Ochocinco, Cincinnati's career leader in catches, yards
receiving and name changes, booted an extra point late in the first
half of the Bengals' 7-6 win over New England.
Patriots QB Brady was knocked down twice on his 13 snaps. But
Brady got up quickly both times, his left knee passing the test
after surgery that followed a season-ending knee injury in last
year's opener.

NFL-BURRESS-WEAPONS CHARGE
      Burress accepts prison deal

NEW YORK (AP) - Former New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico
Burress (PLEHX'-ih-koh BUR'-ihs) has pleaded guilty to a weapons
charge and agreed to a two-year prison term for accidentally
shooting himself at a Manhattan nightclub.
The ex-wide receiver pleaded guilty to one count of attempted
criminal possession of a weapon, a lesser charge than he initially
faced. Under a plea agreement, he accepted a two-year prison
sentence and two years of supervised release.

James leaves Cavs hanging...Wallace heading back to Motown

UNDATED (AP) - LeBron James is unlikely to accept a contract
extension from the Cleveland Cavaliers until after the 2009-10
season, when he can become a free agent.
At an event hosted by one of his sponsors, James made his
strongest comments yet about his future. The NBA's reigning MVP
said he signed a three-year contract in 2006 with an option so he
would have more flexibility once it expires.
The Cavaliers offered James a contract extension last month.

and Ben Wallace have agreed to reunite. Wallace will receive a $1.3

the 2004 NBA title and later left as a free agent to play for the
Chicago Bulls. He was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers and then to
Phoenix as part of the Shaquille O'Neal trade.

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) - Kentucky's Rich Brooks figures it was appropriate he was the last coach to speak at Southeastern Conference media days in the first session.

He joked Wednesday that he is used to being picked to finish last each year. That's hardly a lock these days for a team that has won bowl games each of the past three seasons. One reason for Brooks to be optimistic is that he expects quarterback Mike Hartline to be much improved. He cites the progress Andre' Woodson made before his junior season.

Brooks said there should be a stronger supporting cast for Hartline as well after he worked with five freshman receivers last season.

He said the next step for the improved program is competing for an SEC title.

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) - Dan Mullen showed his youth and tech savvy with a quick tweet before addressing a few hundred Southeastern Conference reporters at media days.

The first-year Mississippi State coach joked about tweeting "I am on stage," while punching buttons on his cell phone.

The 37-year-old Mullen breezed through a 14-minute opening statement Wednesday on his goals for the team, his personnel and his multiple spread offense. Mullen won't be coaching Tim Tebow like he did as Florida's offensive coordinator, but he praised the leadership of returning quarterback Tyson Lee.

Mississippi's Mr. Football Tyler Russell also joins Lee and sophomore Chris Relf in what Mullen says will be "pretty stiff" competition for the starting job.

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) - Arkansas' Bobby Petrino is hoping to approach the recent success of second-year coaches in the Southeastern Conference.

Petrino said Wednesday at league media days his team should be much better, deeper and more experienced after winning just two SEC games last season. At Florida, Urban Meyer won a national championship in his second year. Alabama's Nick Saban won 12 games in Year 2 last season.

Petrino said he feels by the second year players know better what the coaching staff expects and can react quicker on the field.

The Razorbacks also have 6-foot-7 quarterback Ryan Mallett, who sat out last year after transferring from Michigan. Petrino said Mallett is more mobile after trimming down more than 25 pounds from the 265 he weighed upon arriving.

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) - The Vanderbilt Commodores aren't getting much of a break after recording their first bowl win in five decades.

The Commodores must play 12 straight weeks without a break, and coach Bobby Johnson said that coaches have to take that into consideration in not overworking players during preseason workouts.

Johnson said that might be the biggest challenge facing his team, not trying to make a second straight bowl game for the first time in Vandy history. The 'Dores' win over Boston College in the Music City Bowl was their first postseason victory since 1955.

Another challenge for Vandy: Picking a starting quarterback. Larry Smith led the team to the bowl win in his first start while Mackenzi Adams alternated with Chris Nickson in the season's second half.

HOOVER, Ala. (AP) - Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive says the league won't be able to sustain recent success without avoiding "self-inflicted wounds," such as NCAA sanctions and coaches drawing attention to themselves at the expense of others in the SEC.

At SEC Media Days in Hoover Wednesday, Slive said he has told conference coaches it is time to recommit to following the rules.

Five years ago, the league adopted a policy requiring coaches to report concerns about other SEC schools to their athletic directors. Several coaches have publicly aired out complaints or accusations about their peers or other schools in recent months.

Slive also pointed to the league's three straight football national titles and other athletic successes in saying this period might someday be regarded as the league's "golden age."

NASCAR-MAYFIELD
Mayfield gets another day in court

UNDATED (AP) - Attorneys for NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield were in U.S. District Court in Charlotte today.
The lawyers filed a motion today saying a federal judge correctly granted an injunction that lifted Mayfield's indefinite suspension for failing a random drug test. The filing is a response to NASCAR's request that Judge Graham Mullen's order be put on hold as the decision is appealed to the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va.
Mayfield was suspended May 9 for failing a drug test conducted eight days earlier. NASCAR has said he tested positive for methamphetamines, and Mayfield has denied ever using the illegal drug.
NASCAR filed a motion July 6 that disputed the judge's conclusion that the chance of a false positive on Mayfield's drug test was "quite substantial. NASCAR announced three days later that Mayfield had failed another drug test this month.

NFL-VICK/FEDERAL SENTENCE
Former NFL star Vick's dogfighting sentence ends

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) - Michael Vick's federal dogfighting sentence has ended and he is now free to lobby for a return to the field. Vick's attorney Lawrence Woodward told The Associated Press outside Vick's suburban Virginia home that the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback had been released from federal custody as
scheduled. That means Vick no longer has to wear the electronic monitor he's had on while under home confinement for the last two months of his 23-month dogfighting sentence.  Freedom allows Vick to step up his efforts to resume his pro football career. He hopes to meet with the NFL commissioner soon. Roger Goodell (guh-DEHL') has said he will review Vick's status after the suspended star completes his sentence. He's also said he
wants to sit down with Vick, but it's unclear when that face-to-face meeting will take place.
If Vick is able to return to the NFL, it won't be with Atlanta. The Falcons released Vick in June.

TURNBERRY, Scotland (AP) - Tom Watson's pursuit of history continues at the British Open. The 59-year old showed all the controlled, precise play of his heyday en route to a 1-over 71 and
the lead after three rounds. Watson fended off the challenge from younger golfers, one of them half his age, to post a 54-hole total of 4-under par, good for a one-shot edge. Birdies on 16 and 17 gave the five-time champ a one-shot lead over 35-year old Matthew Goggin and 28-year old Ross Fisher, who shot 69 and 70 respectively.
Watson will be trying to duplicate his win at Turnberry in 1977 when he outlasted Jack Nicklaus for the second of his five Open championships. He'll be trying to equal the Open record for most
wins and become the oldest golfer to win a major.  To do it, he'll have to hold off Lee Westwood and Retief (reh-TEEF') Goosen are two shots off the lead, and Jim Furyk

Pernambuco.
The autopsy findings reportedly stated Gatti's body was "suspended and hanged, indicating he may have committed suicide."It reportedly further indicated "murder or accidental death"

WASHINGTON (AP) - It's going to be a long All-Star break for Manny Acta. Their 26 wins are nine games fewer than the next-to-worst team in baseball, the Cleveland Indians.
