MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Auburn and Alabama baseball teams will meet the next two seasons at Montgomery's Riverwalk Stadium. The MAX Capital City Classic was announced Thursday. The two meetings are scheduled for March of 2009 and 2010. The teams haven't met in a regular-season, non-conference game since a seven-year series at Montgomery's Paterson Field from 1990-96. Auburn and Alabama met annually at various off-campus sites in the state during the 1980s and 1990s. The Crimson Tide holds a 4-3 edge over the Tigers in games played in the capital city.
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama quarterback John Parker Wilson has been named to the preseason watch list for the 72nd Maxwell Award. He is one of 76 collegiate players named to the list. The award is given annually to the nation's top college quarterback. Wilson, a senior from Hoover, has been UA's starter at quarterback in each of the last two seasons. He is closing in on school records for career passing yardage (6,382) and career TD passes (41). The winners of the 2008 Maxwell Award will be announced in December. AUBURN, Ala. (AP) - A former Auburn and Olympic high jumper will get a chance to try out for the Harlem Globetrotters. Donald Thomas was one of six players selected in the Globetrotters' second annual draft on Wednesday.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - Brett Favre is considering coming out retirement, according to an ESPN report. ESPN's Chris Mortensen says a Green Bay Packers source told him the 38-year-old Favre told coach Mike McCarthy in the past two weeks that he has the itch to play. The Packers' former quarterback retired March 6 after a 17-year career. Cornerback Al Harris said on ESPN's NFL Live that Favre also made similar comments to him.
